Stop plans to cut trains from Blackheath to Victoria
The Government has confirmed that all services on the Bexleyheath Line to Victoria will be cut after the new franchise is awarded in 2018, despite the Government’s own consultation showing that 89% of respondents were opposed to plans to cut the number of local rail destinations.
The Government has ignored their promise that these changes would only be made “if passengers supported it.”
Cutting these services would be a disaster for commuters in areas like Bexleyheath, Welling, Blackheath, Eltham, Kidbrooke and elsewhere who do not have access to the DLR or the Underground, so have to depend on the rail network. In particular, elderly and disabled passengers, who use the service to access Kings College Hospital at Denmark Hill, will face much more difficult journeys.
Sadly the petition site has now closed with only 8,377 signatures (short of the 10,000 needed) so if you feel strongly about losing this valuable service then you will need to write to your local councilors and also Matthew Pennycook MP, who has been debating this issue in Parliament. You can watch highlights here or read the full transcript here.
As of 7 June Matthew said that he didn’t hold out much hope at this late stage but will continue to press the Government to think again.

LWA Committee changes
As well as welcoming Shipi and Aldous, we paid tribute to Ali Nooruddin who’s stepping down after six much appreciated years as LWA Treasurer. As we said at the AGM, new members are welcome; we only meet 2-3 times a year so get in touch.
Councillor Brighty reports from the recent post mortem of the summer music event; residents’ concerns will be addressed next year by monitoring to reduced noise levels and better communication prior.
National Neighbourhood Watch and Crimestoppers hope you can spend three minutes completing their short online survey to assess awareness of how to combat abuse. Click here to access the survey.
20mph Speed Limit
You’ll have noticed Lewisham’s lower speed limit, on roads through Blackheath, Lee etc this past year. Police have been seen enforcing this with mobile cameras; be warned!
